    The Niven Jazz Collection

Half a decade ago I came across a small blog post on ElectronicBeats.net that pointed me to an interesting collection on Archive.org. Per the post:

David W. Niven was a high school teacher from New Jersey. But his legacy will be the 650 cassette tapes of early jazz that he recorded throughout his lifetime.

The entire collection is more than 650 Gigabytes of jazz that you can access for free thanks to the wonderful people at Archive.org. By the collector’s own estimation, there is over 10,000 hours worth of music collected on these tapes, which were then digitized by archivist Kevin J. Powers.

Thank you so much to David W. Niven, Kevin J. Powers, and everyone else who had a hand in making this archive available.

    100 Days of Indie Web 2023 – #10

This marks post number ten for the 100 days experiment, and we are at January 28th when this is published. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, here are some interesting dates:

    • If you wrote one post every day starting on New Years Day, for 2023 your last day would be April 10th. This is the day after Easter this year.
    • If you wrote every other day, your final post for the 100 days of Indie Web project would be July 19th.
    • If you go every three days between posts, your last day would be October 27th.
    • If you messed up your timing and went every four days for some reason, and assuming a January 1st start, you would overshoot New Years Eve 2023 by 35 days, landing you at February 4th.
    • Finally, the last day you could start this project and stay in the same calendar year (not that this is a requirement): September 22nd.

Since we are talking about dates, don’t forget there is an annular solar eclipse in 2023, specifically October 14th. Thanks for reading, maybe I will do another check in at post #20.

    QR Code Tool: QRazyBox

Do you ever have a need to extract information from a QR code that is damaged or obscured in some way? You might try QRazyBox, which I have successfully used for a CTF challenge to solve a challenge related to QR codes.

QR Code that redirects to novakeith.net

You can import as much of the QR code image that you have, or manually draw it in using the editor. Under the “tools” tab at the top, there are different ways to extract data and brute force information out of the information provided. As always, a good place to start for base knowledge is the Wikipedia article on QR codes — specifically, the error correction subsection is a wealth of knowledge on how the system is designed to recover lost information.

    Xenharmonic Music

Did you know that just about every last piece of music you’ve ever heard is written with the same twelve notes, repeated in different octaves? There are plenty of combinations. But what happens when you explore frequencies outside of those twelve notes?

    Microtonal tunings.

This wiki is a great resource to learn about different tunings – because there are many different alternate tunings available. One of the albums I recently heard which employed microtonal tunings is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Flying Microtonal Banana. The Xenharmonic Wiki also contains a huge list of Bandcamp and Spotify links if you would like to explore further.

    Build your own camping trailer

The text reads, Build the "Wild Goose" - a sturdy overnight trailer. It's a photo of a 1950s era car towing a classic teardrop trailer

Do you want to build a camping trailer? I have the guide for you. It’s not exactly the same as the one I built, but if you follow these instructions it will probably end up looking better than mine. (Mine was built with a custom profile so the ‘standard’ measurements you find on the web didn’t apply).

If you do end up building one, send me a message or an email. I’d like to see it! And let me know where you want to go once it’s done. Keep an eye out for me in Colorado, and the neighboring states.
